You decide to put up a website, and the next decision is what to call it. Most people would want to use the name of the company; after all, they’re proud of it and want to advertise it. Before you grab all the .net, .com, and .org domain names associated with your company name and every variation of it, you might want to reconsider.
“Wally’s World” may be a great name for your company, but if prospects are searching on widgets, consider a domain name with widgets in the title, such as www.wallyswidgets.com rather than www.wallysworld.com. (Note: I thought these were fictitious websites, but of course the above domains have already been scarfed up. Sorry if you were considering them.)
In other words, if having the search engines find you and get you to the top of the list is a consideration, be sure to use relevant search criteria (keywords) in the domain name. It’ll just make things easier for you in the end. There are other areas where your keywords come into play throughout your website, but for that you’ll need to work with your web designer and search engine optimization company in the development process of your website.
